Mmmm…. beer. Mmmmm…. bacon. Mmmmm… bacon beer? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

What happens when you take a strong porter recipe then add some smoke, then a little bit of oak, and then… bacon. I’m not sure yet, but I can’t imagine it could be bad. Hit me up around Xmas this year to find out.

So the rock city reunion show at The Note on 8/22/2010 was a great success. We raised a bunch of $$ for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and had a blast doing it. We also consumed large quantities of Yuengling Lager and Black & Tan, which I have not had in many years. It was a nice reminder of the stuff we used to drink in the olde days… it also allowed us to stay moderately sober until we took the stage for our set… then we started pounding the whiskey.

By the end of our set I was pretty blasted, then of course it seemed like a good idea to crack open a few of the Corrupt Ales that I brewed for the occasion. Nothing better to top off a night of drinking than a 10% barleywine. I don’t remember much after that, but I did make it home. Then next morning my wife went downstairs to find all of the lights on, an open bag or Doritos, and a trail of spilled beer drops from the kitchen to the living room. Sounds about right for the night after playing a Corrupt Justin show. Check us out making fools of ourselves below:

I’ve Got a Woody!

That’s right, I’ve got a woody and you are all loving it.

I guess should clarify things a little here. I was driving through town the other day and spotted a used 5-gallon oak barrel being sold at a little roadside flea market. I picked it up for 20 bucks then brought it home and tried to fill it. Unfortunately, it leaked like crazy.

Determined not to give up, I did a little Internet research and found some instructions for reconditioning an oak barrel. I dropped it into a trash can full of water, put a few bricks on top to keep it submerged, and then let it sit outside in the summer heat-wave for a few days. Today when I went to change the water in the trash can I pulled the barrel out and the leaks seem to have disappeared. I refilled the trash can with fresh water and submerged the barrel again and plan to let it site for a few more days.

After the soak, my next step is to patch any leaks (if they exist) then begin sanitizing the inside to prepare it for fermenting. I have a recipe for a nice Smoked Scottish Red ale that I will be brewing in the next week or so. If all goes well, it will go through secondary fermentation in my reconditioned oak barrel.

Mmmmmmm…. smoked woody goodness.

Corrupt Ale Bottled

The Corrupt Ale has been bottled, which means the reunion is not far away. August 22nd quickly approaches, which means we have to get our asses in gear and have a few more practices… possibly even sober practices (we will probably get a lot more done that way).

As I bottled my Belgian Strong Dark ale tonight, I came up with an idea for my next brew. “Corrupt Ale” will be a tribute to my old punk band “Corrupt Justin” and should hopefully be ready in time for our reunion at the end of the summer (keep an eye out on www.westchesterrockcity.com for info).

This beer will represent the spirit of the band when it was at it’s pinnacle… everything in excess! Big grain bill, lots and lots of hops, and high alcohol content. This will not be a beer for the meek… we will just have to make sure we do not drink any until after our reunion set.
